| | Invention of Lithium
Dr. Doug Stewart
Lithium was discovered before Johan Arfvedson in 1817, during an inquiry of petalite
(LiAlSi4O10).
He organize the petalite contained Ą°silica, alumina and an alkali.Ąą (1)
The up to date alkali metal in the petalite had lone properties.
It required more acid to neutralize it than sodium and its carbonate was only sparingly soluble in unstintingly ¨C to sodium carbonate.
The changed alkali differed from potassium because it did not persuade a reckless with tartaric acid.
Arfvedson tried to bring out a untainted swatch of the fashionable metal sooner than electrolysis, but he was ineffective; the battery he reach-me-down was not effectual enough. (2)
The sanitary metal was sequestered the following year sooner than both William Brande and Humphry Davy working independently.
Davy obtained a skimpy quantity of lithium metal aside electrolysis of lithium carbonate. (3)
He acclaimed the new element had a red heartthrob color to some like strontium and produced an alkali dnouement when dissolved in water.
In days less safety-conscious than the present, Brande said of lithium, Ą°its discovery tastes acrid like the other persistent alkalies.Ąą (4)
By way of 1855 Robert Bunsen and Augustus Matthiessen were independently producing the metal in chunky quantities at near electrolysis of molten lithium chloride.
LithiumĄŻs name is derived from the Greek word ĄŽlithosĄŻ interpretation, ĄŽstone.ĄŻ |
